This ex-school teacher would love to have the give-away this week!

What makes a good artist?? Following your heart and mind in the direction you want to go. Listening to your inner self. Paying heed to what plays in your head while doing your art. Doing your own thing. Talking to others "who get it" and not listening to those who don't.

Just be.

Being yourself and letting go. When I first started doing ART I always tried to mimick someone else. Since I have found my trueself I find it much more enjoyable. I am starting to find what I REALLY like and what I kind of just like.

I love to put that special touch, make it grand but most all do what you LOVE to do and it will turn out great! Beleive in yourself and patience is a virtue!

Giving yourself the freedom to try new things-to do the unexpected-to create what makes you feel good and proud.

I think if you have created something that is personal, beautiful, and enjoyable TO YOU, you have created art, therefore you are an artist. First and foremost, you have to enjoy it, if it is ignored or rejected by others, who cares? It was made for you, by you.

A good artist - you just need to pay attention, learn as much as you can about your medium and practice so that you can use it to express yourself. Be still and listen, go with your intuition and follow your gut. Be brave and as much as possible to not be afraid.

Great blog!!

Hi! Thanks for the email, I know you are very busy so it meant a lot that you took the time . . .

What makes a good artist? Well, all artists are good at what they do, it's so personal, everyone is the best at saying what's in their soul and how they want to say it. But, . . . hmmmmm . . . if I have to put aside diplomacy, I would say a good artist is observant of the world around them.

Thanks for all the time you put into your blog. It is very inspiring.

What makes a good artist?
Willingness to take chances. Being able to accept mistakes as a challenge and an exploration. Once you've gotten successful with an idea/design/medium, etc, pushing yourself onto do something more.

I think everyone has said it. Be true to your heart, and art will spill out. Thanks for the chance for some goodies.

what makes a good artist? My mother used to have a plaque on the wall of her kitchen. It said "Cooking is like love. It should be entered into with abandon or not at all."
And that's what I think a good artist is. Cuz all the other stuff will come with the motivation, the creative inspiration, drive, challenge, etc, but entering into it with abandon keeps you on the right side of yourself--keeping out of the supposed "rules" of it, of the judgement, of the compared to, of the "like I wanted it to" of fighting with your inner self and all those other voices and demons...all that bullshit.
With abandon.
With RECKLESS abandon.
Cheers!

TIME & the freedom to create when the muse nudges you in the butt! I had all the time in the world to create when I was unemployed/SAHM and I'd procrastinate. Now I'm working full-time w/a 2 hr commute (total) each day and *wish* I had just an hour of that free time I wasted away.

I love vintage textbook pages. I was lucky to find a few books (more jr. high school like) at a wicked cool flea market/antique place down in Pensacola, FL two summers ago.

Have a BLAST in Jersey! I lived there for 13 yrs---just up the road from Tinton Falls in Lincroft. Get some pizza and some subs! :)

I love this books, they would just add to my obsession with vintage school stuff, I seam to keep hording it. I think a ggod artist is someone who is willing to try new things and experiment...don't be afraid to mess up, just keep trying.

What's good????????? As long as I like it, it's good! Just enjoy the process, love what you do, take time to listen to your heart, and create. If you do this, it's good art.

I think it is confidence that makes a really good artist!

I definitely need these to use in my new house in SAN DIEGO! Who's going to help me when my blog needs a new look now? Pick me.

Love your blog and your giveaways!

Hmmm, what makes a good artist? I guess you have to first figure out what the word "good" means to you. So conversely, is there a "bad" artist?

I teach middle school art so I try to get my kids (and me!) to be problem solvers more than anything else. I think that makes a good artist.

Being able to have a vision of what you want to create (the problem) and figure out how to make it happen armed with knowledge of materials and techniques (the solution).

Problem solver = good artist.

I know I'm too late, but I wanted to answer anyway! To me, a good artist is a happy artist -- someone who loves their process and can just get lost in it. I used to be all angst-ridden about my art, so it was hard to let go and really enjoy the creative act. Now, I'm much happier as an artist. I lose myself in the flow more and more often. And my art is "better" than it's ever been!

I maybe too late..but what makes a good artist? Heart, and love of what you do makes a good artist, it shows up in your work, with every piece glued down or every stroke of the brush, every stitch in the fabric, they all radiate that love you have for your craft...nuff said~

I agree with many but especially what Jenna said
