Jasper H. Singer was primarily a jobber (re-seller) of games and novelties in lithographed paper on wood, which included toy theaters and popular games. Based like many out of New York. These are two pictures from his ABC alphabet and picture blocks game. Very popular during 1893-1895.
I love the clown /instructor. Creepy but very cool! Alphabet blocks first appeared as early as 1693. I love it when I find a stash of old vintage blocks. They give every altered piece that certain extra kick. The best idea I've seen is when people cut them down and use them as jewelery pieces and book covers. Kinda sad- but such is new life for something old in the altered world."Next is the cover of the McLoughlin Brothers,1890-"Goldenlocks and the Three Bears Game". Love this cover.The McLoughlin Brothers were the leading maker of games in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1920 the corporation was sold to Milton Bradley & Company.
The last is a vintage spinner from "Round the World with Nellie Bly".A game that was created based on Elizabeth Jane Cochrane.She is better known by her pen name, "Nellie Bly," which she adapted from the Stephen Foster song, "Nelly Bly." Daring and innovative, she gained world fame when she beat Jules Verne's fictional character Phileas Fogg's record for traveling around the world in 80 days by more than a week, departing on November 14, 1889 and returning to New York on January 25, 1890.
Several games were created and based on her. If you don't know of her- you should check her out. There are also trading cards about dear Nellie. Nellie would be a fantastic themed art piece and topic. Great material to work with. My good friend Judy B -I can see you creating a stunning piece based on "Nelly"! Thanks for these really cool images!! What a good idea!! I think your stash is greater than mine, but I do have a garage full of stuff! I already saved the images and will plan a project for next year. Thanks for all the good words in your blog!! My grandkids are something, aren't they??
